All was fine for a while. The girls swam, we had dinner with a movie, and our bedtime routine went smoothly. It wasn't until I started getting ready for bed that I knew I'd made a mistake in agreeing to stay in the room.

*For any of you who are struggling with fear in a way that you've been praying to not see anything disturbing, save this post for another day's read when you are at the point that you are working to overcome the fear. Adding to anyone's anxiety over awakening to the spiritual realm is not what I or my mom ever want to do. Awakening is a process and it took years for both of us to be (mostly) comfortable with being in tune.

While I was washing my face, I was overcome with the feeling of being watched. I instinctively glanced to the open bathroom door, and in my mind's eye, I saw what looked like a pale, too-thin child-looking not human (that's the best way I can describe it) slinking around the door, smiling at me menacingly. To say that I felt my stomach drop would be an understatement. I remember thinking, "Oh, great. Here we go." I prayed that it would be removed from the room, and I slowly felt its presence fade away.

The girls had planned to sleep in the same bed and had been excited to do so the entire drive. Once I'd tucked them both in, my younger daughter began hysterically crying, saying she was scared and wanted to sleep with me, which upset my older daughter. After a lot of conversation and tears, my younger daughter moved into my bed, and I put pillows on the other side of my older daughter's bed to help her feel more secure. The bathroom light was on to serve as a makeshift nightlight, the thermostat was bumped down to 69 degrees, and we settled into bed.

My younger daughter fell asleep soon after, but my older daughter could not get settled. I was on edge, but I knew I had to get some sleep since we had a five-hour drive ahead of us the next day. It seemed like just as I was about to drift to sleep, my older daughter would whisper something to me or tell me she couldn't fall asleep. Later, she told me she felt very scared in the room. I could barely sleep. Not because I wasn't exhausted, but more so because every time I seemed to move beyond dozing, I immediately woke up.

When I finally, finally fell asleep, I had a dream that seemed to be distorted and just off. In the dream, I could smell what smelled like burning. The scent was so strong, it woke me up. I opened my eyes and realized that I was, in fact, smelling this strong burning scent, and the room was incredibly hot. Almost immediately, my younger daughter woke up beside me and said she'd had a scary dream, and my older daughter sat up in her bed and said she was hot.

I checked the thermostat, and it still read 69 degrees, so I bumped it down to force the air to come on, and I checked the air conditioning unit under the window to make sure there were no issues. The smell had gone at this point, and my uneasiness was growing...particularly when I went to check my phone for the time and realized it was dead. So, I checked one of my girls' iPads and felt a jolt of fear run through me when I realized that it was almost 3:00 am - the witching hour.

Now, I had never believed in the "witching hour" because I had experienced spiritual activity at all hours of the day and night. I believe in it now.

As soon as I lay back down and closed my eyes, I had a vision of a man's face smiling at me. The skin melted off of it until it was just a skull with red eyes smiling at me. I immediately opened my eyes and could feel this being's presence standing in the room. I knew the burning smell and the heat had been from him. Nothing I did could remove him from the room; however, the girls and I were safe in the circles of white light I had cast around us.

On and off I had visions of distorted figures, and could feel their presence in the room. I had a vision of several zombie-like beings with skulls for faces protruding out from the wall above our beds, leering down at us. I got angry at this point - don't mess with my kids! The anger is actually what seemed to push them out and away, and the heavy energy in the room finally began to dissipate.

I then had a vision of my pillow. I saw what I would have seen if I had opened my eyes. In the vision, a big black spider with long legs was slowly creeping towards my head. My eyes snapped open, and I checked all the pillows before lying back down.

By this time, it seemed that the heavy energy had almost faded away. I checked my phone and was shocked when it powered on...and also that an update had been triggered on it, which I assumed was from the swell of spiritual activity.

My children told me later that they were afraid of that room, and I felt horrible for not trusting my gut feeling and insisting that we switch. When you have anxiety, sometimes it's hard to know what is a gut feeling and what's just nerves. But you'd better believe the next time a hotel room tells me to stay out, I'll listen.

On our trip back, we stayed in the same hotel. I'm happy to say the energy in that room was light, welcoming, and we all slept great.

With love and gratitude,

Kelly
