*Words of wisdom for inspirational thought are at the end of the story!

As I walked around Josie’s home, I was blown away by the beauty of her landscaping. While the front yard was filled with trees and foundation shrubbery, it was the backyard that captivated me. It was filled with an assortment of beds and islands made up of various shrubbery and cheerful flowers: a of mix annuals, perennials, and flowering bulbs. While we winded along the path the arrangement of beds created in the yard, she shared with me her love of color and how she made sure to have flowers sprinkled throughout her yard just waiting to put a smile on her face in whatever direction she looked.

“Do you have any help with all of this?” I asked, taking in the spaciousness of the yard.

“Not usually,” she shrugged, “but, Bob helps me whenever we have shrubs to plant, replace, or transplant.”

“Yes, so take this little guy,” she pointed to a small bush to the left, “he’s a recent transplant. Sometimes after planting, I notice the initial place I’ve planted it in is not agreeable with the plant. It will normally tell you quickly when it’s not happy with its current location. Plant life tends to be forgiving, but only if you act quickly. Bob is really good about checking on all the newly planted shrubs and helping me stay on top of keeping them all healthy and happy in that way. I usually handle the planting of flowers, bulbs, and perennials and all of the fertilizing and watering.”

“And weeding?” I already knew the answer as I had watched Josie pull countless weeds here and there within the beds as we strolled through her yard.

“Oh yes,” she chuckled. “We try to get the mulch just right at the beginning of each growing season, but it’s impossible to keep weeds out; they will grow anywhere and can grow when nothing else will. You know,” she mused, reaching down to pull a weed encroaching on a bright clump of flowers, “a weed is just a plant growing in the wrong place that intends to stay.”

“I never thought about it that way before,” I grinned. “I only notice them when I see you go to pull them up…they are all green. What’s your secret?”

“Diligence,” she stated.

“Even the best garden or landscape has weeds; you have to stay right after them, notice the difference in the leaf color, structure, or texture and pull it up as soon as you see it. It’s basically a daily chore.”

“I have heard if you give a weed an inch it will take a…yard,” I replied slyly.

“You are so ‘punny,’” Josie grinned, shaking her head.

We walked around three more islands in silence, enjoying the sea of color within her yard. “You know, there’s a really good life lesson in how you handle your weeding,” I said thoughtfully.

“How so?”

“Think about it,” my head tilted side to side, “the little negatives that pop up in our daily lives come no matter what we do to try to prevent them. They grow when nothing else will and negativity, like weeds, can spread anywhere, has the ability to flourish quickly, and loves company. Many times, negativity rears its head in areas of our life that we would never imagine, the same way a weed can grow in any little crack or crevice. Sometimes we don’t even notice that negativity has sprouted into our attitudes and thoughts until it has grown too large to ignore.

“Just like the diligence you reflect in your weeding,” I motioned to the flower bed in front of us, “we as individuals must be just as diligent in removing negative emotions and thoughts from our main focus. If we do not use diligence in assessing our actions, reactions, and thoughts, it can provide fertile ground for the negative to crowd out the positive. Your practice of pulling weeds any time you see them is something that all of us can learn from because...
